variable ratio reinforcement

The single best method of reinforcement from a learning theory standpoint is a variable ratio schedule of reinforcement. That is to say, one will receive a positive reinforcer (a consequence that increases the likelihood of future specific actions) after a variable number of target bahaviors. Unlike a fixed ratio, the variable ratio is unknowable by the learner. The most notable example is a slot machine. Other examples include clicking to this blog over and over and over knowing that one of these clicks something good is going to show up. Just remember that the odds always favor the casino!

Thursday Thirteen-13 things I've learned on the 1st days of school

Kindergarten-Bus numbers are important things to remember as all busses don't end up at my house.

1st grade-Different year, different teacher, different rules and no naptime makes chris a tired boy

2nd grade-Despite popular opinion in the circle of boys...kissing girls doesn't lead to instant warts

3rd grade-Bus numbers are still important things to remember...nuff said

4th grade-Summertime records for most bugs, fish and lizards caught should automatically be adjusted up on the retelling of such adventures. Its always best to tell your stories last!

5th grade-No matter what you've been led to believe over the phone for the past 2 months, girls don't develop into supermodels over the summer.

6th grade-Even though Michael Jackson was cool in 5th grade a single white glove doesn't work well with camo parachute pants.

7th grade-Chinese throwing stars, dull as they may be, are considered weapons so don't bring them to school

8th grade-No matter what prior experience has suggested girls do in fact turn into supermodels over the summer!

9th grade-They call it Senior hall for a reason...

10th grade-Freshmen are so small.

11th grade-Senior hall is overrated.

12th grade-The first day of school was two days ago? Oops...at least I know my bus number.

michelle advised me that more frequent blog entries are expected when one's blog has been made public.

Those of a psychodynamic persuasion may suggest that my sudden lack of ideas for content is a sign of blocking...perhaps repression of some dark id-like material that would like to spew forth but which is certainly too base for society at large. And even as my psyche is currently working hard to quash those unsavory tidbits from my public commentary I can't help but wonder what in the world is so awful about what I have to say that I can't even eek out a bit of it to chew on awhile. Just a tiny little speck that I could refine and remodel, that I could, through revision and censor, make suitable for a blog read the world over (see how my superego uses exaggeration to frighten my ego into action!) This darkness must be horrific, filled with lusts and drives, hedonic motives that if let free would surely burst forth like some grotesque plague of unbridled selfishness.

or maybe I just don't have anything to write about tonight.

Yes...I'm OK with my private insanity being so abruptly splashed 'cross the wide open ether like an August melon splayed open for hungry children who cannot wait to bury their faces into the sweetness within. Just mind the seeds.

I can't say I was too surprised by my wife's recent ouster blog...what with all the pressure mounting from her partners in crime...you know who you are! It was only a matter of time before someone cracked and the whole story leaked.

My original intent was to nudge Rich into a virtual game of one-upsmanship...an idea that turned out to be more like a "win a dollar if you can go 3 rounds with the giant Brooklyn Bruiser boxing champ" at the county fair than a true contest.

So, that's when I decided to just put a good ol' game of Pac-Man on here and try to forget my ineptitude for a few minutes out of each day.

You two did a great job on the birthday party. I can post this personal message to you as you are the only visitor to the site. So it's really just like a note posted to you on the bulletin board of the 3rd floor Intro to English Lit building (why would they put a bulletin board up there anyway).

At any rate I'm continually impressed with the two of you and your knack for creative flair and mucho fun. (Michelle and I are still talking about the next lightsaber battle we're going to have).
